Joycat Ex: Three National Winning Kittens from China Photos copyrighted by the individual photographers
Allen Chen and his wife Angela breed Exotics under the Joycat Ex cattery name in Shanghai, China. Allen fell in love with Exotics the first time he saw one. He decided he wanted to breed and show the wonderful "shorthaired Persians". His goal is to produce show cats with terrific personalities, cobby bodies, massive legs, large and deep copper eyes, small ears, round heads, smooth doming and with sweet, open expressions.
Part Wai Ex Allen was determined to begin his breeding program with the finest Exotics he could find. After spending many hours searching the internet he fell in love with the look of Part Wai Ex Exotics owned by Penni Richter in Riverside, California. Allen and Penni began corresponding. Then, in 2012, Allen flew to California to visit with Penni and meet the Parti Wai Ex kitties in person. It was the beginning of a very special friendship. Allen was able to begin Joycat Ex with the best of the Parti Wai Ex bloodlines. In particular, he purchased two exceptional male Exotics that would be the foundation of his breeding program—CFA's Cat of the Year 2012-2013, GC, BW, NW Parti Wai Ex Jackpot, and another beautiful boy—GC Parti Wai Ex Vin Diesel of Joycat Ex. Little did he know the impact these two males would quickly make on Joycat Ex. The two boys would sire a trio of national winning kittens in their first litters. Besides sharing the best of her bloodlines with Allen, Penni became Allen's best friend and his mentor. As Allen says, "No her, no me!"
The 2013-2014 Show Season CFA's presence has been growing steadily in south-east Asia, and especially in China. With more cat clubs becoming established, there is now a CFA show most weekends in China.. Allen helped to promote CFA in China and is a member and secretary of the China International Pedigree Cat Fanciers Club in Shanghai, China. The club holds four cat shows a year in Shanghai. Besides Jackpot and Vin Diesel, Allen also bought a Brown Spotted Tabby & White Exotic male from Penni. Allen decided he would try to campaign "66" (also called Rudy) as an adult. Allen learned how to feed, groom, show and breed his cats from Penni and he felt confident that he could do a good job showing Rudy. Rudy needed time to mature. In November of 2013, Rudy and Allen flew to the CFA World Show, held in Novi, Michigan. Rudy was Highest Scoring Exotic and Third Best Cat in the Red Show. After the World Show, Rudy was shown only in China. He continued his winning ways and moved up the CFA national standings. By the end of the 2013-2014 season, Allen had campaigned Rudy to 9th Best Cat in Championship—GC, NW Parti Wai Ex Route 66 of Joycat Ex. Rudy is the first national winner in CFA shown by a Chinese citizen. Rudy also won the title of Best Cat in the International Asia/Latin America Division. It was Allen’s first time showing a cat by himself; the first time he showed a cat owned only by him. He had guided the kitty to becoming a National Winner. It was a dream come true and an incredible learning experience. The Summer of 2014 After all the excitement of a successful national campaign with Rudy, it was time for Allen to rest and regroup. Plus, In the summer of 2014, the first Joycat Ex litters were due to be born. In June 2014, Parti Wai Minnie Mouse gave birth to a litter of kittens sired by CH Parti Wai Ex Vin Diesel. Allen's pick of litter was a brown tabby and white female. He named her Joycat Ex Super Diva. Several months later, two more litters were born on the same day, both sired by Jackpot. Pick kitten from one was a dilute calico named Joycat Ex Wessex Tiara and a blue and white male from the other was named Joycat Ex Panthere Bleue. Allen decided he would show all three when they were ready. The CFA World Show Only Diva was old enough to go to the CFA World Show 2014. Although just 5 months old, she made 3 out of 10 finals in the Purple Show against the best kittens in CFA. It was a promising start for such a young kitten.
Drawing on everything he had learned about grooming, conditioning and campaigning while showing Rudy, Allen began showing all three kittens. The Joycat Ex babies began doing very well. He showed them almost every weekend in China. It required long driving trips and airline flights to different parts of mainland China. All three kittens were wonderful campaigners—always happy and easygoing, thriving on all the attention. Showing three kittens made for a very busy and tiring campaign, especially in the last few months of the season. Campaigning the kittens in China was a big challenge. While China is actually larger in area than the United States, it is limited to having just a single show each weekend. This meant that for many weekends the only show was a long, long distance away. Kitten counts were high in China and the competition was fierce. But it was lots of fun too!
A Light Heart Lives Long Allen has a motto—"A Light Heart Lives Long". It is a philosophy he applies in his personal life, in his work . . . and in his life as a cat fancier too. He believes in living a life filled with happiness—to enjoy life to the fullest. Showing his kittens was never all about winning. Every show weekend it was important to him that he enjoy dinner with his friends in the different cities he visited. He and Angela have purchased a new home especially chosen so all the Joycat Ex kitties can live happily as house pets. Allen is looking forward to the next show season . . . and the next.
