The cat fancy in the middle of the 20th century was a far different world from what we know today.

In 1950, only 6 breeds were recognized by CFA for competition!! Those 6 original breeds were:

Abyssinian
American Shorthair
Manx (SH only)
Persian
Russian Blue
Siamese

Over the next 50+ years, an impressive number of new breeds were added, and today, CFA currently accepts 42 different breeds for competition.

Here's a look at the timeline for the addition of new breeds:

1984	Tonkinese Himalayan was merged with the Persian breed Malayan was merged with the Burmese, creating a "Burmese - Dilute" division
1986	Javanese
1987	Chartreux Ocicat
1988	Singapura
1989	Manx - LH (originally known as the Cymric)
1993	American Curl - LH and SH divisions Japanese Bobtail - LH division Norwegian Forest Cat Scottish Fold - LH division
1994	Turkish Van
1995	Oriental Longhair
2000	Ragdoll Selkirk Rex - LH and SH divisions
2002	European Burmese Sphynx
2006	American Bobtail - LH and SH divisions Siberian
2008	LaPerm - LH and SH divisions
2010	Burmese Sable division and Burmese Dilute division merged - Sable and Dilutes to compete as a single breed after this date
2011	RagaMuffin
2014	Burmilla - LH and SH divisions
2018	Bengal
